Earner
URN-er
Definition
URN-er
A member who reliably generates money and passes a share upwards. The single most valuable quality a man can have in the organisation, and frequently the only one that protects him.
“A good earner is forgiven a great deal, and a man who stops earning discovers how much of his standing was arithmetic.”
Every other virtue these organisations claimed for themselves — loyalty, silence, respect — is conditional on this one in practice.
The record is consistent about it. Men who broke rules and kept earning survived; men who kept rules and stopped earning did not. Whatever the induction ceremony said about brotherhood, the operative relationship was that a soldier sent money up and received permission to operate in return.
